Week 2

Greg Giorgio

I'll start out this week ...

Artist: Joss Stone
Album: The Soul Sessions

Comments: I need to ask how one gets invited to the Oprah's Book Club for Your Ears club? I think my buddy Dan would not only love to be involved but I think that everyone would enjoy his taste in music. I would like to also nominate Chris Pelletier for membership. "Eric Straten, rush chairman. Damn glad to meet you."

Adam Fleishman

Artist: Robert Plant
Album: Dreamland

Comments: This album caught me by complete supprise when I first listened to it a few years ago. Not only does it have a great vibe, but it rocks as well. Robert's voice is as good as ever, and the track listing includes all kinds of covers from blues to jazz to rock and roll in southern creole. A fantastic album to have as a backdrop to whatever your doing, It comes very highly recomended.

Richie Victorino

Artist: Strangefolk
Album: Lore

Comments: hmm … Next suggestion to all is this: well i'm going to somewhat "pussy" out on this because this is a CD that's been in my collection for a long time, and many (most) are familiar with the band, but make sure you listen to this CD... from start to finish it is a perfect story of an entire summer of mine (99)...
Ahh the actual album I forgot to add!
Strangefolk, LORE, a tight effort, and a bigger sound than expected from this "never really been that big" band.

Ben Peirce

Artist: Beach Boys
Album: Pet Sounds

Comments: This is by no means an unknown album and its as much a recommendation for myself as it is for anyone else because I haven't really given it a good listen. Pet Sounds is a much-heralded classic though that pushed all sorts of boundaries in recording techniques and was meant to be presented as one cohesive piece of music, a la Sgt. Pepper's (although this actually came our a year earlier) as opposed to a collection of catchy songs which is probably what most people think of when they think Beach Boys. Find a time when you can listen from start to finish and give it a try.

Josh Nason

Artist: Chevelle
Album: This Type of Thinking Could Do Us In

Comments: I agree with Greg...CP and La Dan. My selection has nothing to do with the Dirrrrty South from which I just returned. However, it does have something to do with the band I saw Thursday before leaving: Chevelle - This Type of Thinking Could Do Us In Just straight forward, kick you in your face, hard rock. Perfect if you're having a day when you need the adrenaline to rise a bit. To see them in concert is a must as well...by the way, the Hampton Ballroom is a frickin' great place to see a show.

Week 1

Ben Peirce

Artist: Ween
Album: Chocolate and Cheese

Comments: OK so here's a little Musical experiment: As we've often discussed there are never enough suggestions for the true Musical connoisseur. With Rhapsody, iTunes and various other avenues to instantly access music, we can find ourselves with more time and access to music than we have ideas of what to listen to and yet the thirst for new music continues. So here's my idea, albeit a very informal low-tech version of an idea from Mr. Sadler. Take a small group of people with similar musical tastes and have each person offer a musical suggestion each week (month? day?), thereby giving the whole group a handful of suggested listening items to turn to each week. Think of it as Oprah's Book Club for your ears.

Greg Giorgio

Artist: Miles Davis
Album: On the Corner

Comments: Even though I made you guys listen to it last night, my first recommendation is Miles Davis On the Corner. A jazz CD but one of the best ever. Listen to it when you have nothing else going on but music. Oh, I think that means that I am in.

Josh Nason

Artist: Blink 182
Album: Blink 182

Comments: Released just before their 'hiatus,' this album is nothing like any of the previous work, most of which was thought to be immature MTV rock with zero substance. This disc changed all that and shows maturity, musical diversity and a lot of energy. Partially inspired by bands like the Cure, this disc kicks ass.

Brady Sadler

Artist: Kings of Leon
Album: Youth and Young Manhood

Comments: Contemporary Southern Rock - Three brothers and a cousin. The vocals take some getting used to and can be hard to understand. You'll recognize some tracks as backing from recent TV commercials. Their new album is also very good. I saw them at the Paradise in Boston just before they went on tour with U2. They are great live and will be playing at the Avalon in August with the Secret Machines (I've yet to get into this band but I'm told they are good live). Dig it. B

Richie Victorino

Album: Spoon
Album: Gimme Fiction

Comments: Man I've been pumping this one for a while, I'm not sure why. These guys are from Austin, TX, which probably adds to how cool they are by default. Sorry, but somehow that's true. I think this album sounds like a modern day Beatles without sounding like a band who wants to be the beatles (Oasis). I'm not sure there's a track I don't like on this.

...

Adam Fleishman

Artist: Iron and Wine
Album: The Creek Drank the Cradle

Comments: Good afternoon everyone, I'm very excited to be a part of the Oprah Book club for Ears Organization! I think that people have such cool artists in their collection that many people (friends/family) may or may not have ever heard of so this seems like a good thing to spread round. Moving along I recently re-discovered this artist. His band is featured on the Garden State soundtrack, but beyond that I've never heard of him. His songs are extremely mellow and he plays the banjo. Most of his songs seem to sound alike, and if your in the mood for chilling out, this works pretty well in my opinion. …
